KATHMANDU, DEC 23 - Nepal will take on Sri Lanka in what could be a battle for a second place in the first South Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship here at the National Sports Council covered ball on Tuesday.

Both Nepal and Sri Lanka are joint second in the standings with two wins and a loss each while South Asian powerhouse India are on top with three consecutive victories.

A win against Sri Lanka in the five-nation round robin championship will see the hosts at least secure second place and walk away with $ 1,000.  Nepal coach Sudish Rimal said: “India blew our hope of lifting the title but we are keen to finish second.” Rimal however warns the task will not be easy and his girls’ will have to play the best game in order to beat the opponent.

“They are highly experienced than us and will test us to the limit. But we are ready for the challenge and can come out winners if we play to the best of our abilities.”

India, who had begun the day with similar points as Nepal and Sri Lanka secured pole position with a 26-24, 25-11, 25-19 win over the island nation on Monday.

Maldives ended their losing streak in the tournament by defeating Bangladesh 25-17, 13-25, 25-23, 25-19. The win left Maldives on fourth with three points. Bottom placed Bangladesh have yet to open their account.
